CZIKOWSKY: Do you know what proportion of veterans living in Thailand have severed ties with the United States as opposed to remaining Americans and choosing to live there? When one mentioned voting, I wondered if most are still voting citizens?
CHING: That’s a great question, and unfortunately I can’t quantify the answer. Based on the information I gathered, many (perhaps most) of the expat veterans living in Thailand travel back and forth to the U.S. a couple times a year. Many have family in the U.S. and leave town to escape from the humid heat of the Thai summer. So I’d say most have not severed their ties completely. Most keep their American passports, and if they vote in U.S. elections they vote by absentee ballot or vote while they are in the U.S.
